Perform
The Bromley Formula Ice Performance Innovation programme supports the performance of British sliding sport athletes in three ways:
Development of cutting-edge technology and equipment that aim to give the athletes' the edge
Provide in competition technological support during gruelling competition schedules.
Help the athletes develop implementation strategies to maximise the impact of Formula-Ice technological developments.
The F-ICE 2010 mission has been specifically focussing on the following innovation projects:
Developing the world's fastest Skeleton sled - design evolution based on research in Aerodynamics, Handling, Control and Human Interaction.
Developing the Ultimate Performance Bobsled runner - cutting edge blade technology that considers frictional energy losses and handling. The Bobsled runner is the ice world’s equivalent of the Formula 1 race car tyre.
Development of Virtual Training Platforms – development of simulated environments to bring the tracks to the UK to mitigate the effects of restricted access to the real thing.
David vs. Goliath
Britain’s winter sports athletes often fall short of international success due to inadequately structured technical backup, sport specific scientific & engineering knowledge and insufficient practice time due to the disadvantages associated with their geographic location.
Drawing an analogy with the parable of David and Goliath, the Bromley F-ICE team proves the gap between Britain and the stronger winter sports nations can be 'part bridged' by focussing on the UK’s particular strengths in research and engineering. (link to Vision)
